"Steel Beams", anexample of a light sculpture

Light Sculptures

Jörg used the principle of car safety glass to develop a glowing color feature for light sculptures. With Emerald Glass of Pittsburgh they fabricate triple glass sheets with polished edges and laminate stage light color sheets in between using high temperature vacuum chambers. High-power LED strips are integrated on the bottom edge between the three sheets and radiate though and out of the sides of the three layer, by optical light refraction at the varioius planes within. Steel construction principles that we found on old Pittsburgh bridges guided us to connecting heavy steel irons. An special detail is the holes drilled into the beam structure, a detail that we found on a bridge, to accomodate further beams of a bridge construction. We believe that these holes add to the overall substantial appearance of the 1/4" steel beams. This very heavy piece is thought to be placed freestanding on the floor. We use 5 feet tall glass sheets but we can arrange for other custom made sizes, e.g. to enable placing the pice on a platform. The steel is blow torched, welded and grinded; the nuts and bolts heavy industrial grade; and the steel surfaces are power wire brushed and waxed. The steel surface can alternatively be rusted. For the color of the glass we picked a very dark navy blue, but you could ask for custom colors - please see the one photo with color examples of similar pieces. 110V power supply included. Transport of this heavy pieces requires special arrangements.

With Emerald Glass of Pittsburgh we laminate stage light color-sheets between plate glass, similar as safety car windows are made. An LED strip (110V power supply included) is mounted on the bottom end of the glass. This light sculpture gives a subtle very dark blue "glow". that is visible only at night. Reflections of the light radiate out of the top towards your ceiling. The 1/4" thick 4x4" I beams are welded, grinded, wire-brushed and waxed. A rather substantial, heavy piece. Custom color-sheet variations can be enabled - please see one photo with various colours of the glass sheets.
